OSCEOLA DISTRICT NEWSLETTER, MARCH, 2007.

Coming up this Thursday evening is our Monthly Roundtable meeting.

Please attend as this is the Monthly meeting with all of the leaders and is the only place we can be updated on a monthly basis. Unit Commissioners don’t forget about the Commissioners meeting at 6:30 and the Roundtable will meet at 7:30.

Before I get into the things that is going on in the District I need to bring you up to speed on our Web Site: www.osceolascouts.com. Mr. Pottridge has now put in some old Photos of many of the folks you will remember. He also puts the Newsletter in on a monthly basis and usually leaves the last 2 Newsletters on the website and erases after that. The District Calendar is also on the website except we still have to include October 2007.

The Crossover Camporee this past weekend was attended by T-011, T-023, T-205, T-243, T-274, T-345 and T-347 who were camping. Many of the other Packs and Troops attended for the Merit Badges being offered. It came together very well even though some of the Counselors were not able to attend. The 4-H club and their horses was a hit. The tote and chit class is always well attended. The Sheriffs Administrative Group did the Fingerprinting Merit Badge again this year, which was well attended. I will have the Fingerprinting Cards with me at Roundtable if a leader from the various units will see me or advise as to where they want the Fingerprinting Cards Mailed. This nest feat is Dangerous but I want to thank as many folks as I can remember who did a lot of work to make it a good weekend. First of all The Leaders and the Troops made it a good weekend. Tom Hopkins and David Barfield kept the event organized. The Merit Badge Counselors made it the hit that it was. i.e. Ed Kent and Randy Andrews, Tom Hopkins, Terry Bennett, Sheriff Toth and his assistant, Beth Sullivan, Phillip Sullivan, Hester Longstreet and her Team, Curtis Steed (T-011) who stepped in at the last minute and did the Auto Mechanics Merit Badge (sorry Mike about your Mother) Mr. Donlan, and his team who constructed the Crossover Bridge and/or did the Pioneering Merit Badge and AlLee Watkins who done the organized sports.

Thanks again to all of you and THANKS also for you dedication in cleaning up on Sunday Morning. We had to wash down the bathrooms after everyone left but everything did look good when we left.

The OA call out was well attended, thanks OA team. The Organized Flag Burning was emotional, Thanks Art. The campfire skits was pretty good as well. THANKS-ALL.

AlLee wanted me to remind everyone about the RIVER CLEAN-UP on March 17, Meet at the Trout Creek Park at 8 A.M. on SR 16 near Pacetti ‘Fish Camp. You should be finished by 11 A.M., Wear comfortable Clothes, gloves, hat, sunscreen and bring trash bags. A flyer will be available at the Roundtable. ALSO, April 21 is the Beach Clean Up. Wear Comfortable Clothes, hats, and sunscreen. Bags, gloves and other supplies will be available at Micklers Landing, Vilano Beach Ramp, St. Johns County Pier, and Crescent Beach Ramp. You can choose the place to work. Hours 8 A.M. to 11 A.M. but you can work longer if you need to. I will attempt to attach another Flyer.

David Barfield asked if we should have the Canoe Race this July. He needs your response as to whether you want to attend or not. It will be very short. From Palmo Fish Camp (County Boat Ramp) to Riverdale park. I am checking to see if it is possible to camp at the County Boat Ramp Park.

Please let David Know what your interest is. E-mail jamesjdavid@se.rr.com.

David is in the process of finding out where the Troops are going to Summer Camp, the number of Scouts scheduled to go and the number of Leaders that are scheduled to go. We need this information even though your Tour Permit is normally what gets you Credit for attending a long term camp. If your selected Summer Camp is over 500 miles a national Tour Permit has to be processed.

I just received the insurance bill from the Troop accident Insurance carrier which reminds me to tell you that you must have accident insurance if one of your Scout get hurt at an outing, meeting or going to and from your Unit meetings. Please tell the Parents if you don’t plan on carrying the insurance. I don’t believe you can afford not to carry the Insurance. Health Special Risk, Inc (HSR) is very reasonable. I keep reminding you because I want the District Committee and our District Chairman to be able to say we told you so. This leaves all the responsibility on the Leaders of the unit(s).

Notice to all Troop Leaders; From Justin Rutland

For those of you that may not know, I am serving as the Camp Director at Camp Shands this summer. I would like for you to get the word out to your older boys that I am looking to hire staff in the areas of: Waterfront, Dining Hall, Scout Skills, Handicraft, First year program, and other various areas of camp. Please have them contact me directly on my cell phone (904) 652-4014. I will be able to answer any of their questions.

Paul Starr has the Pinewood Derby all arranged at the Wards Creek Baptist Church, Saturday, 24th of March. I see where he had notified all of those that we have e-mail addresses for or that we knew who the Cubmasters were. If you do not see a person on this or his e-mail that should know about the Pinewood Derby, please notify them and us. The fee is $1.00 and you have to run a car that meets the Boy Scout Rules. The manufacturing sheet comes in each Pinewood Car Box. Paul did a good job laying it out for you so please contact him if you didn’t get the information. paulstarr@bellsouth.net I will be trying to attach a schedule.
